The inaugural Tyler J. Sansonetti Memorial Race, held on October 5th, 2024, at the historic Bushy Run Battlefield in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, was a remarkable event that brought the community together in support of a noble cause. This race served as a heartfelt tribute to Tyler J. Sansonetti, honoring his legacy while supporting Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans (LCSDFV). The organization focuses on raising funds to aid Veterans affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and other challenges by funding the training and provision of Service Dogs.
The race was organized with unwavering dedication and love by Tyler’s wife, Beth Sansonetti, and his sister-in-law, Pamela Peretic. Their tireless efforts involved meticulous planning and coordination to ensure every detail honored Tyler’s memory. Beth and Pamela worked closely with local businesses to secure sponsorships, coordinated with volunteers to manage event logistics, and even took the time to create personalized memorabilia for participants. Their commitment ensured the event was not only a heartfelt memorial for Tyler but also a beacon of hope and support for Veterans, raising awareness and resources for their needs.
Many Marines who had the privilege of serving alongside Tyler eagerly participated in the event, demonstrating the deep camaraderie and unwavering loyalty that define their brotherhood. Their presence was not just a tribute to Tyler’s memory but also a testament to the enduring bonds formed through shared service and sacrifice. These Marines, embodying the spirit of ‘Semper Fi’—always faithful—came together to honor their fallen comrade, reflecting their collective commitment to support one another in times of need. Their involvement underscored the profound respect and dedication they have for each other, reinforcing the strong sense of unity that characterizes the Marine Corps.
Joining the race were Tyler’s parents, Maureen and Paul Sansonetti, alongside his brother Andrew and sister Nicole. Their presence added a deeply personal and emotional dimension to the race, symbolizing their unwavering love and commitment to keeping Tyler’s memory alive.
The race saw outstanding performances, especially from young participants like Josephine Lenart and Luke Robinson, who claimed the overall first and second places, respectively. These young achievers not only celebrated personal victories but also embodied the spirit of perseverance and community support.
The day was made even more vibrant with a musical performance by Josh Jams, whose tunes kept the energy levels high and spirits soaring. The combination of music, community, and a shared cause made for an unforgettable experience.
At the heart of the event was the mission of Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans. The organization plays a crucial role by raising funds to support the training of Service Dogs, which are then provided to Veterans through Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs who trains and provides the Service Dogs at no cost to the Veteran. LCSDFV is currently focused on raising funds for a new campus in McDonald, Pennsylvania. This facility will be pivotal in breeding and training Service Dogs, ultimately supporting up to 70 additional Veterans each year. This initiative is a significant step toward addressing the shortage of Service Dogs and ensuring that more Veterans receive the companionship and support they deserve.
The event was further enriched by the participation of Bill Jeffcoat, Joanne Jeffcoat, Len Stidle, and Craig Hodgkins, accompanied by his Service Dog, Foxy. They were present to explain the mission of LCSDFV and share personal stories, like Craig’s journey with Foxy, highlighting the supportive network surrounding Veterans and their families.
The Tyler J. Sansonetti Memorial Race was not just a race; it was a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of community. It highlighted the importance of supporting Veterans and the transformative impact of Service Dogs. The funds raised during the event are critical in advancing the construction of the new campus, bringing the mission of LCSDFV closer to reality.
As the event concluded, participants and organizers alike felt a profound sense of accomplishment and unity. The success of this inaugural race has set a strong precedent for future events, ensuring that Tyler J. Sansonetti’s legacy continues to make a positive impact on Veterans’ lives for years to come.
