On October 27, Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans (LCSDFV) hosted the heartfelt and inspiring event, *Donna Grooms From a Distance*. It was a night dedicated not only to honoring Veterans from across generations but also to raising crucial support for LCSDFV’s mission. Held at Salvatore’s in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the event combined music, reflection, and community, leaving everyone with a sense of unity and purpose. From touching tributes to powerful music performances, the evening beautifully illustrated the mission of LCSDFV, which is to transform the lives of Veterans by providing them with Service Dogs to aid in overcoming both visible and invisible wounds.
The evening’s focal point was Donna Groom’s moving tribute performance, “From a Distance,” which took attendees on a journey through letters exchanged by loved ones with Veterans throughout history. The letters highlighted messages from the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the more recent conflicts in Afghanistan, each letter carrying with it the emotion and resilience of those who served and their families.
Accompanied by heartfelt performances from musicians Kim Alexander and Lisa Bleil, the show evoked memories and honored the bravery and sacrifices of our Veterans. Their music filled the hall with the powerful sentiments of connection, love, and patriotism. Attendees felt transported, as if reliving these poignant moments alongside the men and women who penned these letters during some of the most challenging times in our nation’s history.
The mission of LCSDFV is one of compassion and empathy. By providing Service Dogs to Veterans, LCSDFV aims to improve the lives of those who have sacrificed so much. Many Veterans return home with physical injuries, but countless others carry emotional scars and psychological trauma, often hidden from sight. Service Dogs play an essential role in helping these Veterans regain confidence, independence, and joy, providing companionship and support for those grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and other conditions.
LCSDFV’s mission is founded on the belief that no Veteran should struggle alone. Service Dogs offer support to Veterans in their darkest moments and help them navigate the everyday challenges of civilian life. The statistics are staggering: approximately 22 Veterans a day take their own lives. LCSDFV is committed to reducing this number by connecting Veterans with the healing companionship of Service Dogs, giving them a renewed sense of purpose and hope.
The event continued with a delicious meal catered by Salvatore’s, whose cuisine was nothing short of exceptional. Vickie and her team at Salvatore’s made sure each guest enjoyed the evening’s dinner, which added a warm, familial feel to the event.
Adding to the excitement, the evening featured a variety of beautiful gift baskets up for raffle, as well as a 50/50 drawing, offering attendees the opportunity to win prizes while supporting LCSDFV’s mission. Each basket showcased the generosity of the local community, with contributions from Sam’s Club in Washington, PA, and Costco in Homestead, PA. The raffles and donations raised funds to further LCSDFV’s mission of providing more Service Dogs to Veterans in need.
One of the highlights of the evening was the screening of the video, *The Miracle of Service Dogs*. The video brought into focus the challenges Veterans face and highlighted the invaluable impact of Service Dogs in their lives. It conveyed the real-life struggles of Veterans, touching on both visible and invisible disabilities, and how Service Dogs offer essential support, especially in dealing with PTSD and preventing suicide. Words like “Impactful,” “Powerful,” “Emotional,” and “Moving” echoed throughout the room as attendees reflected on the importance of LCSDFV’s mission. A round of applause followed the video, with attendees visibly moved by the profound message it conveyed.
This video served as a reminder of the urgent need for resources and support for our nation’s heroes, many of whom struggle in silence. The applause that followed was not only for the video but also for the impact that LCSDFV is making in the lives of Veterans and their families.

Pittsburgh’s own Skyliners closed out the evening with an unforgettable musical performance. Attendees joined in singing some of the group’s iconic hits, including “Pennies,” “This I Swear,” and “Since I Don’t Have You.” The Skyliners’ performance brought joy and nostalgia to everyone present, bridging generations and creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration.
Their lively set was a perfect end to the evening, with everyone singing along, dancing, and celebrating the camaraderie shared among those who support our Veterans. The music lifted spirits and filled the room with energy, ending the night on a high note and reminding all that the community stands together in support of our heroes.
