Thomas Jefferson High School Raises $12,000 and Delivers a Powerful Tribute to Veteran(s) Through Music and Community

Thomas Jefferson High School recently demonstrated the true meaning of service, gratitude, and community by hosting an extraordinary day-long event benefiting Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans. Through a carefully planned series of activities—including a Veterans breakfast, a moving morning musical program, and an unforgettable evening performance—the school raised $12,000 in support of helping provide Service Dogs to Veteran(s) in need.

What made this event exceptional was not only the amount raised, but the depth of respect, intention, and heart behind every moment. Organized and led by Thomas Jefferson High School under the leadership of Principal Pete Murphy, the day honored Veteran(s) across generations while educating the community about the ongoing needs faced by those who have served.

A Morning of Gratitude: Veterans Breakfast and Fellowship

The day began with a breakfast open to all Veteran(s), creating an atmosphere of warmth and appreciation from the very start. Veteran(s) were welcomed into the school and invited to share the meal with their families, including children and grandchildren—a gesture that reflected a thoughtful understanding that military service impacts entire families, not just individuals.

Students, staff, and volunteers helped create a space that felt both celebratory and sincere. Conversations flowed easily as stories were shared across generations. For many Veteran(s), it wasn’t just a meal—it was a moment to be recognized and thanked in a setting filled with respect. For students, it was a chance to connect with living history and to show appreciation in a tangible way.

This simple but powerful act of hospitality set the tone for the entire day: one rooted in gratitude, community pride, and genuine care.

Morning Musical Program: Patriotism Through Performance

Following breakfast, Veteran(s) were escorted into the auditorium for a morning musical program featuring performances by the TJ Symphony, TJ Band, and Chorus. Under the direction and leadership of Music Director Julie Luchey, the students delivered a program designed to uplift and honor—through patriotic music that reflected pride in country and appreciation for those who served.

The performances were heartfelt and polished, showcasing not only musical talent, but a clear sense of purpose. Each piece carried the spirit of tribute—music chosen and performed to communicate what words alone often can’t: “We see you. We thank you. You matter.”

Interwoven with the musical performances were guest speakers whose words gave the morning program even greater depth:

  • Purple Heart U.S. Marine Veteran, who spoke about service and sacrifice with firsthand insight.
  • Bill Jeffcoat, Vice President of Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans and a Marine Vietnam Veteran, who shared the mission behind the organization and the importance of community support.
  • Retired Marine MSgt Craig Hodgkins, who spoke alongside his Service Dog, Foxy, sharing their story and helping the audience understand what a Service Dog partnership can mean in daily life.

Together, the morning’s music and messages created a moving tribute that left many Veteran(s) visibly proud, emotional, and deeply appreciated.

Supporting Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans

At the heart of the event was support for Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans, an organization dedicated to raising funds to help Veteran(s) receive highly trained Service Dogs at no cost to them. It’s important to emphasize that Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans raises money for Service Dogs—it does not conduct the training itself. The funds raised help offset the significant costs associated with obtaining trained Service Dogs so that Veteran(s) who need this support can receive it without financial burden.

Service Dogs can assist Veteran(s) with mobility challenges, balance support, PTSD symptoms, and other service-connected conditions. The $12,000 raised by Thomas Jefferson High School will directly contribute to that life-changing mission—making a real difference for Veteran(s) who deserve practical, reliable support and renewed independence.

Throughout the day, the school did an outstanding job communicating this mission clearly and respectfully, ensuring attendees understood exactly what their generosity was helping accomplish.

Evening Activities: Community Fundraising and Anticipation

Before the evening program began, additional fundraising activities helped build excitement while supporting the overall goal. Attendees participated in:

  • T-shirt sales
  • Gift basket raffles
  • 50/50 drawings
  • Cookie Sales

These elements didn’t feel like “extras”—they felt like part of a shared purpose. Students and volunteers worked seamlessly, creating an environment that was organized, friendly, and energized. The community showed up ready to support, and it showed in every ticket sold, every basket admired, and every moment of encouragement offered to the students who had worked so hard to make the day possible.

Evening Performance: “From a Distance” — A Musical Journey Through American History

If the morning program was uplifting, the evening performance was breathtaking.

The centerpiece of the night was “From a Distance,” a powerful musical program written and performed by Donna Groom. While Donna performed select pieces herself, the program primarily featured individual Thomas Jefferson High School students singing the songs, giving student voices the honor and responsibility of carrying the emotional weight of each historical era.

The show began with the reading of a Civil War letter, grounding the audience immediately in the personal reality of war—not as an abstract concept, but as lived experience. From there, the performance moved chronologically through American conflicts, pairing each time period with music that reflected the spirit, struggle, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served.

This historical structure took the audience through wars and eras all the way to present day, using a combination of narration, context, and music to connect the past to the people sitting in the room that night. It didn’t feel like a standard concert—it felt like a journey. A remembrance. A tribute told through voices, instruments, and stories.

Veteran Voices That Opened the Evening

Before the full “From a Distance” performance unfolded, the evening program began with remarks and recognitions that connected the audience directly to the mission and meaning behind the night.

  • Bill Jeffcoat spoke again on behalf of Life Changing Service Dogs For Veterans, offering a longer message about the organization’s purpose and the real-world impact of Service Dogs for Veteran(s).
  • Tammy, an Army Veteran, spoke alongside her Service Dog, TJ, sharing her personal experience and helping the audience better understand the importance of Service Dog partnerships.
  •  Craig, wearing his Full Dress Blue Marine uniform, spoke about the life-changing role Service Dogs can play for Veteran(s), sharing how his partnership with Foxy helped him regain independence and stability, reinforcing the importance of continued support for those who have served.

Following the opening remarks, the program flowed into a Salute to the Military, featuring music and songs that honored the branches of service, before transitioning into the historical and emotional arc of “From a Distance.”

A Performance That Left a Lasting Impact

“From a Distance” was more than a show—it was an experience that resonated deeply with Veteran(s) and civilians alike. As the evening progressed, many audience members were visibly moved. Some reflected quietly. Others held back tears. Many left with renewed appreciation—not only for the sacrifices of those who served, but also for the power of young people using their talents to honor that service with sincerity.

By the final notes, the audience felt united in one shared message: gratitude.

An Unforgettable Day of Purpose and Pride

Thomas Jefferson High School delivered something truly special—a full-day event built on intention, excellence, and heart. Under Principal Pete Murphy’s leadership and with outstanding musical direction from Julie Luchey, students and staff created an experience that honored Veteran(s) in a meaningful way and raised $12,000 for a mission that directly supports those who served.

The success of the day wasn’t just measured in dollars raised, though that achievement was significant. It was measured in the way Veteran(s) were welcomed, honored, and celebrated. It was measured in the unity of the community. And it was measured in the way students used music and storytelling to remind everyone that honoring Veteran(s) is not just a tradition—it’s a responsibility.

This event was unforgettable—and it stands as a powerful reminder of what a school community can accomplish when it leads with gratitude, purpose, and heart.
